What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Stress is a completely natural and healthy response to the challenges of daily life. Whether preparing for a big meeting, managing family responsibilities, or dealing with change, some anxiety and stress often keeps us alert and motivated. However, for some people, anxiety takes on a persistent and overwhelming quality that’s hard to control; this is what’s known as Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Individuals with anxiety find themselves worrying excessively about everyday matters and these worries are often difficult to set aside. The anxiety can lead to symptoms such as restlessness, trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, and even physical complaints like muscle tension or stomach upset.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is fairly common, affecting about 7% of adults in the U.S. at some point during their lives. While everyone deals with stress, it becomes a concern when the anxiety is “turned up” so much that it gets in the way of enjoying life. Anxiety disorders are linked to a mix of genetic and psychological factors: some people inherit a tendency to be more anxious, while others may develop anxiety in response to ongoing stress, certain life experiences, or their own thinking patterns
