Perinatal and Postpartum Mental Health

Pregnancy and the postpartum period can be a time of both great joy and incredible challenge. Perinatal and postpartum mental health refers to the challenges that many parents experience during pregnancy and the first year after having a baby. The mental health challenges around childbirth are influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors, including hormonal changes, stress, and support systems. Perinatal anxiety, which includes excessive worry or fear during the pregnancy and postpartum anxiety, is common and affects an estimated 20% of mothers.

While the “baby blues”, a period of sadness and mood swings that most women experience after birth is common, it typically resolves within a week postpartum. On the other hand, postpartum depression lasts weeks to months after birth and can affect self care, sleep, and daily functioning. Up to 20% of mothers and 10% of fathers experience postpartum depression.

Many pregnant women with a history of mental health concerns face a difficult and emotional decision about whether to continue their psychiatric medications during pregnancy. They often worry about the potential risks medications could pose to their baby, while also fearing the consequences of untreated mental illness for both themselves and their pregnancy. This balancing act can feel overwhelming, especially when information is limited or conflicting.
